NIDDK Short-term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons

(STEP-UP)

High School Program

PLEASE NOTE: The application deadline is February 15, 2010. No applications will accepted after this date.

Program Purpose:

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease’s STEP-UP Program is designed to provide short-term research education for high school students from racial and ethnic minority or disadvantaged backgrounds to expose them to research within the mission area of NIDDK.

The Program exposes students to research in areas of diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases.

The Program provides support for 8 full-time consecutive weeks of basic or clinical research education and training during the summer provided by experienced faculty currently active in research related to the mission of NIDDK.

2010 Youth Servant Leadership Oratorical Contest -- Deadline: December 11, 2009


MIFA's fifth annual oratorical contest challenges teens

Each year, students in the Memphis area are invited to participate in MIFA's Youth Servant Leadership Oratorical Contest, which is held in honor of the profound oratorical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students are invited to submit brief speeches in response to the year's theme. This year, the deadline for submissions is December 11, 2009, and the theme is "Something Good in Memphis: My Blueprint for Service."

Application materials include:

  • Letter of recommendation
  • Typed, double-spaced essay in Microsoft Word
  • Transcript or last report card

Students must:

  • Be currently enrolled in and attending public school in Memphis/Shelby County
  • Be between the ages of 14 and 18 as of December 31, 2009
  • Have at least a 2.5 grade point average
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, faith leader, or employer

The NROTC Program was established to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the unrestricted line for the Navy or Marine Corps. Selected applicants for the NROTC Scholarship Program are awarded scholarships through a highly competitive national selection process, and receive full tuition, books stipend, educational fees and other financial benefits at many of the country's leading colleges and universities. Upon graduation, midshipmen are commissioned as officers in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. Student that applies for the 4 year National NROTC Scholarship can attendany college that has a NROTC Unit or a cross town school. Any student that receives a HBCU NROTC Scholarship must attend the following HBCU: (The schools must have a NROTC Unit or cross town.)

70 African American Students Received a 4 year National NROTC Scholarships for 2008. Over 200 African Americans received HBCU 4 yr NROTC Scholarships. In 2009, 129 African American Students Received a 4 year National NROTC Scholarships.
